“River is supposed to crest on Friday,” Rod stated.
“So?” I replied.
“She’s gonna drop fast after that. So if you want to shoot carp with your bow you better do it now!” Rod shouted.
Just a typical Tuesday phone conversation with my dad. The Missouri River was out of its banks and going to rise over the next couple days. The natural disaster wreaks havoc on farmland, but creates bow fishing opportunities as carp and gar move into the slow moving flood water.
Looking at my calendar the only time I could make the two-hour round trip drive was on Thursday after work. I hesitated. That is a lot of miles for just a couple of hours of action. However, as Rod pointed out I might only have a small window of good bow fishing. So I went.
My buddy Tyler met me at 6 pm and we started off wading in the water. We found a spot where fish were consistently passing through an opening in the flooded grass. Our presence didn’t bother the approaching fish and they swam into our laps. The challenge was the shot angle. Due to the waist deep water we had a hard time making the shots.
Adjusting our tactics, we stood in a row boat over the point where the fish were crossing. Perched like snipers we started sticking fish. It was bow fishing like I had never seen before. Carp after carp, gar after gar, we let arrows fly. 90 minutes of bow fishing mania passed and it was time to head home.
On the drive home I kept smiling ear to ear. An opportunity presented itself, and we took action. The result was success.
How Does This Apply to Business?
Do It Now might be the three most powerful words in the English dictionary. At the time of our phone conversation it didn’t look like the river would remain flooded for long. Since then more rain and release water has kept the river high. However, based on the information at the time I am glad I took action and implemented Do It Now. If I hadn’t made the trip I would have missed an awesome evening in the outdoors. When an opportunity presents itself evaluate the information. Make a decision. And Do It Now.
Procrastination might be the biggest deterrent to success. I have been guilty of it. If something is worth doing, then I’m going to have to do it sometime, so I might as well do it now. Ask yourself “what is the most productive thing I could be doing right now to work towards my goals?” Then do it. Don’t over complicate it. Just Do It Now. You will be happy with the results.
Until Next Time Remember…You’re Going to Have to Earn It.
